Research Profile
Andrzej Buras is regarded as one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of quantum field theory applied to particle physics. He conducts research in this field with the aim of constructing a theory of flavour (the different types of quarks and leptons). In this context, he investigates various extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics, with a focus on flavour-changing meson decays and CP violation. His work includes tests of the Standard Model and alternative proposals within supersymmetry, Little Higgs models, and models with extra spatial dimensions. His current research focuses on the so-called Standard Model Effective Theory.
He is one of the most cited particle theorists in Europe, with more than 230 scientific publications and over 60 conference contributions. Until 2008, he was regularly involved in the organization of workshops at DESY (German Electron Synchrotron) and at Ringberg Castle.
Even after his retirement, he continues his research at the TUM Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). He received an ERC Advanced Grant in 2011. For his work, Andrzej Buras has been honoured with numerous international awards, including the Max Planck Medal of the German Physical Society (2020) and the J. J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics of the American Physical Society (2024).
